EC Cycles mechanic, Lewis, recently had the opportunity to work on two Paracycling World Cups. He was asked by Cycling Canada to be the lead mechanic for the project. The first world Cup was held in Ostend in Belgium.
The course was made up of a crit loop around the streets including Belgium cobbles, followed by a fast out and back stretch along the coast. The team was made up of 14 athletes, across 4 different classes. Time trials were held on the Thursday and Friday and then the road race was on the Saturday and Sunday. The team rode their hearts out in both races, fulfilled race expectations and even came away with a handful of medals.
Monday morning came around and it was time to pack up for the 10 hour drive to Elzach in Germany. After what was a long day travelling, followed by an equally long evening building the bikes back up, ready to ride the next day. Same race format as Belgium was used, with a time trial Thursday and Friday followed by the road races on the weekend. The big difference in Germany, was the uphill time trial, with the finishing stretch spiking up to 18% gradient. Again riders rode out of their skins to hit power personal bests and to bring home the medals.
All in all, it was a challenging week, where we had to work on adapted bikes, including handbikes, trikes and tandems. It was amazing to see there are no limits on the accessibility for athletes to still race and compete at the highest level no matter what hurdles they have in there way.
Feel free to pop in store and chat with Lewis about his experiences.

Here at EC Cycles we are blessed by the location of the shop. Being in the heart of the South Wales Valleys, gives us the option of riding in so many good locations. Bike Park Wales on our door step, a 10 minute bike ride away. North we have the beautiful Breacon Beacons with breath taking scenery. And South we have Barry Sidings and Mountain View.
Our personal shop local is a loop around Merthyr Vale and Edwardsville mountain. These steep untamed tracks are attracting a lot of attention lately due to the YouTube video by Bernard Kurr. Featuring the World Cup rider Laurie Greenland, the pair uplift the original left line. Since this video has been out, at the start of January, we have bumped into people traveling from all over the country to ride the tracks. Just last Sunday we me some young lads that travelled all the way from Brighton.
If you have not seen the video yet, check it out below:
As Merthyr Vale mountain is getting more popular more tracks are growing from its original routes. Couple of weeks ago we teamed up with shop customers to ride them and the neighbouring hill, Edwardsville. There are now around 7/8 ways down the two mountain tops. We wouldn’t advise trying to ride them if you are not an experienced rider as all have an average gradient of between 34% and 42%. Which does attract a a lot of local legends and riders from afar.
Big thanks to Jake Morgan that put together the YouTube edit of the day we met up below:
With Storm Eunice causing havoc, ripping through the British Isles, many trail centres are closed for safety reasons. Even riding locally can be very dangerous in the storm. With fallen trees and branches along with gusts of wind, this weekend is not one for riding.
However this maybe a good time to brush up on some trail maintenance. Clearing the track for the next time you are flying down the trails – even creating new lines or revamping new ones!
Customers and staff have braved the weather during the last two days, clearing a lot of debris off the local tracks. Old lines have had a freshen up and new lines created.
We teamed up with MSA Fabrication to bring you the ultimate trail tool for the job. Mitch, owner of MSA, has developed a tool to scrap, cut and dig the mountain, into what we all love to ride. Ask in store for more details in order to purchase.
Storm Eunice will blow over and hopefully we will see you back up on the mountain, shredding some trails.
New in store, we have managed to get our hands on a Scott Addict 30 in a medium frame. These bikes have been hard to get hold of with the world wide shortage of product. All due to Covid complications way back in March 2020.
Gravel bikes are on the up again. With the amount of traffic on the roads increasing and with Covid restrictions lifting, more and more people are jumping onto secluded gravel roads. This beautiful bike has a full carbon frame to keep the weight to a minimum and also to soak up the smaller vibrations of the gravel tracks. Comes with disc brakes, for maximum stopping power, and Schwalbe 45c G-One tyres for a fast yet comfortable ride.
Priced at £2549 RRP I’m sure this bike wont be hanging around in store for long.
Check out this raw edit of a custom Giant TCR build.
Built for a young rider, Luke Protheroe, aiming to complete their 2020 race season on.
If your looking for a one off custom build, pop in store and we can see if we can make your dream bike a reality.
